Subdued - Tarxien

The client embarked on an ambitious project to construct additional apartments above an existing maisonette while completely restructuring the first floor to create a refined private residence tailored to his lifestyle.

Following an in-depth briefing process, we focused on understanding both the client’s practical requirements and the potential of the space. The resulting layout plan was carefully designed to maximise functionality, flow and spatial efficiency.

At the heart of the home lies a welcoming open-plan kitchen, living and dining area positioned along the façade to benefit from abundant natural light. Thoughtful detailing and a seamless layout create a sense of openness and connection throughout the space.

The creative direction centred on a sophisticated palette of off-whites, layered textures and tonal finishes, complemented by a striking teal accent colour introduced through wallpaper, bar stools, cushions and decorative accessories. Contemporary grey and neutral furnishings provide a timeless backdrop, while warm oak elements feature prominently in the dining table and television unit. Rattan pendants and textured off-white dining chairs add depth and character to the scheme.

The generous hallway, finished in crisp white, creates a striking contrast against bespoke panelled doors painted in Grey Owl and detailed with elegant brass hardware. Rope-feature uplighters, carefully positioned planting and subtle lighting contribute warmth and visual interest to the circulation space.

Both bathrooms embrace a contemporary aesthetic, balancing elegance with practicality. Partial wall tiling creates visual lightness while allowing feature wall colours to introduce personality through coordinated accessories, towels and decorative accents. Clean-lined vanities provide ample storage without compromising the sense of space.

The two bedrooms, while distinct in character, share a warm and airy atmosphere. Custom-designed wardrobes, integrated under-bed storage and thoughtfully detailed bedside furniture ensure that functionality and style coexist effortlessly.

A previously underutilised shaft area was transformed into a feature green space, incorporating foliage and ambient lighting to create a natural focal point visible from within the home.

Completing the residence is a cosy study finished in parquet flooring and furnished with distressed pieces and a leather swivel chair. Designed as a peaceful retreat, it provides the ideal environment for productivity, focus and quiet reflection.

The result is a contemporary home that balances comfort, practicality and understated sophistication—an elegant reinterpretation of apartment living where space, style and statement coexist harmoniously.
